A Message from the Director:

In this homepage we present a glimpse at the activities carried out at METU-BIOMAT Research Group located at Biotechnology Research Unit (BRU) building.

Biomaterials is an exciting field for researchers worldwide from various branches of science, engineering and medicine. The interest in this field is also growing in Turkey in general and especially at the Middle East Technical University (METU). Our university has always played a pioneering role and carried out a variety of activities in the fields of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering in Turkey, and the BIOMAT Group is also quite competitive on the international arena. Our activities cover teaching and training, conducting cutting edge research, organizing conferences, and providing consultation and guidance to the national and international inquirers.

Contribution to teaching is carried out through various courses by the BIOMAT professors especially through courses directly relevant with the Biomaterials field. These are;

  • Biomaterials (Bio 514)
  • Macromolecules in Biomedicine and Biotechnology (Bio 554)
  • Controlled Release Systems and Drug targeting (Bio 580)
  • Advanced Biomaterials (Bio 584)
  • Biomedical Materials (Chem 568)

Research conducted by the BIOMAT members are concentrated on biodegradable hard and soft tissue implants, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (bone, cartilage, cornea, nerve, cardiac tissue), controlled release systems (growth factors, antibiotics, anti-cancer agents), liposomes (photodynamic, for gene transfer and drug delivery) and immobilization for the construction of biosensors and bioreactors. The Biomedical Science and Technology Symposia (BIOMED's) was initiated by our group in 1995 and is now being organized at the international level.

With the initiative of our group the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Society of Turkey was established in 2008 and is an affiliate of the European Society for Biomaterials.

The extensive activities of the group and its alumni in various universities the BIOMATEN Center were established. It is a METU Application and Research Center and also a Center of Excellence in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering funded by the State Planning Organization, now the Ministry of Development of Turkey.

In the following pages you will find more details about our activities. Please feel free to contact us for further information.
