Research Field: 

There still is a need for functional tissue engineered bone substitutes due to the shortage of autologous grafts that offer the best healing potential. Mimicking of cell microenvironments is an important strategy for improving the success of tissue engineered scaffolds. It is claimed that a 3D scaffold and environment is better than 2D in the formation and maturing under the in vitro conditions. The aim of the study is to show whether this is true in a model bone tissue engineering system consisting of micropatterned films of collagen and silk fibroin blends by constructing 3D scaffolds by multilayers of these 2D films. Micropatterned 2D and 3D constructs will be compared for their cell guidance and tissue formation under static cell culture conditions and under dynamic conditions of a perfusion bioreactor.
